The Cloud: A Speculative Fiction Novel Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 52 ratings

In twenty-second century L.A. dominated by The Cloud, every imaginable pleasure is accessible—yet the entire world can vanish in a single upload.

That choice rests in one man’s hands.

Blaise, a brilliant but tormented VR programmer, is trying to forget his violent past as a special forces commando by throwing himself into creating VR fantasies. He finds himself tempted by his megalomaniac boss, who offers him wealth, power, and eternal life in exchange for coding a new VR series that will addict and eliminate billions of “unproductives.”

Caught between joining those who want to bring down the ruling Cloud regime in Hong Kong, or accepting the offer of personal immortality, Blaise finds himself flanked by two relentless women—a psychic hacker risking overwhelming personal odds to save humanity from annihilation, and the other using her extraordinary carnal wiles to accelerate the final triumph of The Cloud. Ultimately, Blaise must reembrace his violent warrior nature in a desperate bid to destroy it.

It’s perhaps a cliché to say one person can make a huge difference in your life—except in the case of someone like Mrs. Lee, my sixth-grade homeroom and English teacher at Sagamore Hills Grammar School in Atlanta. She changed mine, profoundly, by making me the class playwright and short story writer. In my clumsy but passionate initial attempts at writing, I discovered my calling. Now that I’ve published my speculative fiction novel The Cloud (details at www.thecloudnovel.com) I hope I can find my beloved teacher. I’d like to hug and thank her with tears of gratitude in my eyes.

My passion for writing eventually landed me in Oxford and London, England, where I earned a master’s degree in Creative Writing from Antioch University, on the strength of my short stories. I won a full scholarship for two years of study there; then returned to the U.S. with a thick English accent to pursue a career in journalism and advertising in Atlanta, Miami, and L.A. Eventually, in 2019, my novel The Cloud won First Place in the science fiction category in the San Antonio Writers Guild 27th Annual Writing Contest. That won me representation from Hollywood literary manager/producer Ken Atchity of Story Merchant Books and Atchity Productions.

Ken loved the The Cloud because it’s speculative fiction exploring frightening possibilities about the future implicit in today’s world. The dramatized events are conceivable, even probable, in my unspecified future. The science and technology I dramatize are already in use or under development: VR, mind control, psychic powers, 24/7 surveillance, disease reversal tech, cryogenics, nanobots, and a global revival of patriarchal political oppression. These elements make The Cloud a spiritual descendant of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and her stunning 2020 sequel, The Testaments; George Orwell’s 1984; and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.

The Cloud emerged from three key events in my life. 1) My 8 ½ years living in Los Angeles during the Great Recession of 2007-2015, where I worked as a copywriter for ad agencies and Fortune 500 companies developing groundbreaking biotechnology and AI-driven computer tech. 2) A failed romantic relationship with a beautiful Asian electric violinist and operatic vocalist I met in L.A. To heal that relationship, I split her into two characters in my novel: the femme fatale Mitsuko and the female protagonist, Kristina--the two women fighting for the soul of my male protagonist Blaise Pascal VII. 3) My three years working for a Fortune 500 commercial real estate company that builds cities of the future worldwide for the top 10% only. My rage against that trend gave me the fire in the belly to write my novel. I front-load my story with plenty of thriller elements--action, suspense, violence, and sexual intrigue--but it's essentially a novel of ideas, a cautionary tale about a future I hope we can avoid.

Beyond my first novel, my goal is to write The Cloud trilogy, a mythological epic further exploring in novels two and three a possible future for an earth threatened by global warming, horrific wars, global pandemics, and political oppression. Against this possibly fatal reality, I’m fashioning a story fueled by the passion, courage, relentlessness, and vision of three powerful protagonists and wounded healers—one male and two female. I’ve also written a pilot script for the TV series adaptation of novel one—which Ken Atchity is developing—and plan to work as a staff writer/producer on the series.

You won't regret reading this book, which takes you into a fascinating, relatable, highly realized/visualized dystopia (not without its charms) in which the main character is thrust into pivotal human dilemmas. The world order is in the balance. Operates on many levels: as a riveting story; a peek into a possible future; a cast of memorable characters who live on the page. It is action-packed with a purpose. Beautifully written as a literary work. Broadly accessible. A page turner. No wrong notes.

Just finished "The Cloud: A Speculative Fiction Novel" by Robert Rivenbark, and I was impressed. I'm a sci-fi fan, & this book ticked all the right boxes for me.

It delves into a world where virtual reality (VR) has become integrated into all levels of society, blurring the lines between reality and simulation. The protagonist, Blaise, finds himself caught in the middle of a corporate power struggle within The Cloud corporation, adding to the layers of intrigue in the story.

I particularly enjoyed its exploration of VR dystopia. Rivenbark does a great job of raising thought-provoking questions about the impact of VR on society, touching on themes of control, addiction, and the human condition in a hyper-technological world.

The characters were well-developed, which is what makes a story truly enjoyable for me, Particularly Blaise, as he navigates the complex web of corporate espionage and ethical dilemmas. Even the romantic element added another layer of depth to the story, keeping me engaged from start to finish.

While some readers might find the technical aspects of VR technology overwhelming, I found them to be a fascinating aspect of the world-building. Rivenbark's writing style is engaging, and he blends complex themes with a fast-paced narrative that kept me reading until the very end.

This is a captivating read that will appeal to fans of VR narratives, corporate intrigue, and speculative fiction. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a thought-provoking and thrilling story.

The Cloud by Robert Rivenbark was fantastic. The author's vocabulary and creative use of comparison descriptions were phenomenal. The story was mind-numbing. Blaise, a brilliant game coder, was swept up into the ruthless corporation's hierarchy, the cloud, a group of psychopaths, and offered eternal life.
His boss, a madman drunk on power, used a beautiful woman to keep Blaise in line. The two became as thick as thieves as she promised Blaise an eternal life filled with pleasures beyond his dreams. Meanwhile, he is seduced by an equally beautiful rogue coder, and she convinces him to bring down the cloud and experience love and freedom without the constant pressure of the corporation.
Pinged between the two options, wondering if he would live another day or if he was caught in a VR trap, the novel steamrolls forward, maintaining a constant level of skilled suspense. Highly recommended.

The Cloud by Robert Rivenbark is set in a futuristic world ruled by virtual reality and controlled by The Cloud, an empire that manages the majority of the world’s VR technology. The story centers on Blaise, a talented VR programmer, who gets caught between two women, both who are involved in their own dilemmas. The author does an incredible job building this world. It mirrors our world and brings up the potential disasters that advance technology could cause. The characters are well developed and relatable. Definitely a wonderful read!

To me, The Cloud is a novel of vision and insight. I found it to be a powerful literary journey that projects today’s toxic social and political trends into a future society that’s scary yet also, unfortunately, quite probable. It’s written in an entertaining literary style with distinctly unique characters. and the story twists and turns that keeps you guessing about how it will all end. In many ways, I felt like I was reading our generation's version of George Orwell's 1984.

It's a richly imagined world, where the contrast between technological advances and human values paints a thought-provoking picture of our potential future. "The Cloud" offers a believable, dark vision of tomorrow that both entertains and invites reflection on our current path.
