Revenge. Hate. Fear. Not exactly traditional wedding gifts. But when convicted killer Ian Patterson escapes from prison, operating room nurse Annie Collins and fiancé assistant district attorney Angel Cisneros are forced to face these realities head on. The wedding plans are in motion with Angel’s mother laser focused on micromanaging her first-born’s wedding into the event of the century. But when events begin to unravel, including the mysterious disappearance of the priest, questions and fears begin to rise. Where is Ian Patterson? Will his quest for revenge toward the two people responsible for sending him to prison—Annie Collins and Angel Cisneros—bring them face to face to settle this once and for all? In this suspenseful continuation of Annie and Angel’s saga, everything will come into question. When it comes to wedding vows and murder, how far would you go for someone you love?

Review

"In her latest mystery-series entry, Starbuck...presents a slow-building tale of an escaped killer and a murdered priest...Annie is a wonderful fictional creation, and one hopes that she and Angel become a classic husband-and-wife crime-solving team. A thriller that offers a master class in suspense."—Kirkus Reviews

I had been looking for a new mystery author and found her in Helen Starbuck. I've read all three of the Annie Collins series and I love how each book just keeps getting better and better. Annie and Angel explore different aspects of life (dealing with FAMILY) as they prepare for their wedding, deal with jobs, handle two mystery cases at once and try to have a "normal" life. I found myself laughing at Annie's internal dialog. If you're looking for characters that keep you engaged as you read, this series is it! Thank you, Helen Starbuck!

Helen Starbuck pens a wonderful series in the Annie Collins' thrillers. From page one I became invested in Annie and Angel's story and the heart-wrenching knowledge that a psychopath is bent on revenge. Ms. Starbuck has a good grasp on police procedure and also the DA's office, which is helpful because Angel Cisneros is an ADA. I think Ms. Starbuck did an excellent job of showing the stress the couple/family would be under if they had no idea when a madman would strike next. I call this thrilling psychological suspense at its finest, and want to go back to book one and two to understand the character growth in these books, although in Burden of Hate, I'm able to fill in the blanks. Annie is mostly a sympathetic character; at times she comes off compassionate -- example: she writes out instruction for a detective with unbearable allergies--I found given the stress she was under extremely heroic. Still, Annie's a little hard on practicing Catholics. (As a practicing Catholic I admit this might just be me). I really related to Angel (no spoilers).

Love how Annie fills her time solving another mystery while always watching her back. I do love medical novels, and will go back and read the other two as she seemed to veer away from hospital scenes in this book. Well worthy of the awards for which she's been nominated.

Sgm. This is the 4th of ms starbuck’s books i have read. Each one is better than the one before. Her descriptive work is without parallel. As a former long-term Denver resident , the city descriptions make me feel as if i were there again.
This book was a bit slow in the mid-section , but much character development had to be done to set the scene for the final climax. The climax, when it came , was quick, dramatic, and believable. An excellent read.!! Keep it up ms Starbuck!

I chose to listen to this audiobook after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Burden of Hate can be read as a standalone but it would be better after reading Mad Hatter’s Son and No Pity in Death.

Annie and and Angel are getting married! Angel’s mom makes sure that it’s a beautiful wedding, but sometimes you can’t plan everything.

The main focus of Burden of Hate is how Annie and Angel deal with Ian breaking out of prison. He’s back, and he’s making clear that he wants revenge. The police are trying to find him, but he’s good at being invisible. Even if he can’t get close enough to kill Annie or Angel, he’s causing a lot of stress in their marriage.

Once again, Annie ends up involved in investigating a murder. This time, the priest who was supposed to marry them was found murdered. She doesn’t plan on investigating it, but her mother-in-law knows the family and promises that Annie will look into it. Annie does come up with some clues for the police.

Annie continues to grow. She’s able to keep her temper under control most of the time, but there were a couple of times she overreacted. Angel doesn’t handle being forced to stay home well. It’s a side of him that I haven’t seen before, and it’s not pretty. It makes him more human, though, rather than the perfect boyfriend he was in the previous book.

I enjoy Helen Starbuck’s writing. It flows well. The narrator, Suzanne T. Fortin, did a fabulous job. Her timing is spot on and vocal expression helps tell the story.

I liked all three of the books in this series that I’ve read so far. I would prefer more focus on the mystery and a little less on the drama, but that’s a personal preference, and I’m sure there are readers who disagree. I enjoyed the ending of Burden of Hate, and I hope there are more Annie Collins stories to come.

Just before our inquisitive nurse and her gorgeous D.A. Angel are about to tie the knot, the infamous murderer they both put away escapes jail and promptly becomes a ghost in the night. Just when will he strike?

Really enjoyed this one, with the constant peering over her shoulder running parallel with another murder investigation for Annie to insert herself into. Have to say, most of my sympathies were with the put upon cops.
