About this ebook

A new series about mind readers from a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author...

Everyone thinks I’m a genius.

Everyone is wrong.

Sure, I finished Harvard at eighteen and now make crazy money at a hedge fund. But that’s not because I’m unusually smart or hard-working.

It’s because I cheat.

You see, I have a unique ability. I can go outside time into my own personal version of reality—the place I call “the Quiet”—where I can explore my surroundings while the rest of the world stands still.

I thought I was the only one who could do this—until I met her.

My name is Darren, and this is how I became entangled with all the Russians and learned that I’m a Reader.

The Thought Readers by Dima Zales is a very creatively written book. In many areas, the author has come up with some very engaging and fascinating ideas. Even though the book starts slow, it does pick up its pace and leaves the reader on a cliffhanger. Her use of the first person perspective is the one thing that can really deter a person from finishing the book, she doesn’t have the skill to pull off this perspective. Her protagonist is not very interesting, but the minor characters really stand out.

Darren, a hotshot cocky hedge fund analysist found early in life tht he has the power to freeze time, and go into what he calls "The Quiet". He can move around while everyone else remains frozen. What he does in "The Quiet" has no impact on the real world, but he can use this ability to snoop - reading private documents, see what cards his opponents are holding, but can't make use of electronics. Plus there's no restriction on how long he spends in this realm, once he comes back, it is as if no time has elapsed. He certainly has found this ability useful, such as at cheating at tests, and in his career as an investor on Wall Street. He finds out he is not alone though, he is not the only person with this ability... but even amongst the few who have the same abilities he has, he may be unique. This story has "everything" -- a protagonist who isn't afraid to tell you exactly how he feels about what's going on, both good guy and bad guy Russians, gangsters, an interesting take on a car chase, a scientist, trouble with one's parents, and drama at a casino. At times, the story feels like it is trying to be "too cool", but that's a minor quibble. The story moves along at a good pace, it's a good summertime read or listen on the commute to/from work or school and you want to find out what happens next and what's in store for Darren... The main character of this story experiences a phenom he refers to as “the quiet.” This is reminiscent of a popular Stephen King term “the shining.” Both experiences leave the gifted individual in possession of forbidden knowledge. The Quiet enables Darren to literally read the thoughts of others, and tamper with anything living or stationary. He cannot influence machinery during his quiet phases. To me, Darren seems a little full of himself, a bit over-confident. Darren has finally began to come to terms with his bizarre abilities, but is searching for someone to understand him. Just when it seems prospects are slim, a very special person enters his world. Could she really share in his supernatural abilities? This story shows promise and it is written quite well. I loved the in depth look at mental powers and think the author put an interesting spin on things. Dima Zales has taken an idea and pushed it to the extremes
