Favorite Quotes:

Daylight is not my friend. Every freckle, frown line, wrinkle, and blemish stands out like a beacon on my face, screaming ‘well past expiration date.’

Didn’t think I’d live to see the day… The most committed bachelor of La Plata County, brought to his knees by a ballsy redhead.

“You remind me of my Ana, she was a redhead like you and could cook like a saint, fight like the devil, and love like a sinner.” His watery blue eyes sparkle. Ten minutes later, when I’m putting away the last of the dishes, I’m still smiling at his words. To love like that, still so strong even after death rips you apart, is tragically beautiful.

… he makes my soul sing.

Trial run with the new babysitter… A seventeen-year-old neighbor with purple hair, combat boots, and enough metal in her face to set off security detectors from fifty feet, but she came highly recommended. I just hope my new flat-screen TV will still be there when I get back.

My Review:

In just a handful of years, Freya Barker has the Romantic Suspense genre well mastered. Her tales are easy to follow yet captivating; cleverly detailed and populated with quirky and endearing characters; deftly constructed with engaging and entertaining storylines; and well-balanced with wry and acerbic levity, sensual sizzle, and tension building intrigue that keeps my curiosity primed. So it is easy to see why she has continuously resided near the top of my Favorite Authors List since I initially fell into her work by picking up Slim to None on a freebie day. Her lovely words are now an instant one-click purchase at any price.

Burning for Autumn is Keith and Autumn's story. There is an arsonist on the loose and he has set his eyes on Autumn. Keith takes on her protection and he's willing to do anything to keep her safe.

Keith is a strong, alpha personality who's very protective. He's avoided relationships but doesn't avoid one with Autumn. I actually really liked how he wasn't afraid to pursue her despite not knowing what a relationship is like.

Autumn is what I consider an alpha female. She's a red head and has the spit and fire that is usually associated with red heads. You would think two alpha personalities would clash too much. At times they did butt heads, but Keith was very good about navigating her fire.

Keith is a big reason why I really enjoyed this book. Along with being protective, he was also pretty possessive of Autumn and had no problems letting other guys know she was off limits.

I did have problems with Autumns stubbornness just because it felt like she argued just to argue, but that's when Keith shined. He is a man who isn't afraid of a strong woman. I liked that he enjoyed her fire.

3 fiery stars!

I was looking for something with slightly older (and wiser) characters in it and found Freya Baker’s On Call series. It was nice to read a book where the characters were over 40 (being over 40 myself) and there was none of the angsty drama and had MCs that knew what they wanted, and didn’t want, out of life.

I liked Autumn, a strong female lead who was smart, funny, a little self-deprecating, a self-proclaimed cat lady, caring, loyal and strong. Keith was the perfect match for her in every way. I loved that, even at 46, he was still sometimes clueless as to how to talk to a woman, but always managed to recognize the error of his ways later.

“If we could wrap our heads around this relationship being more of a joining of forces, than an endless compromise of our own identities, can you imagine how strong we could be?”

I think that I was expecting more when I read the blurb for this book so this was just slightly more than okay for me.

This author writes the most perfect mature characters, Autumn and Keith are perfect examples of that fact. With just a tiny tad of relationship angst, the true drama comes from the mystery surrounding Autumn. The story was evenly paced between the suspense and the romance. With additional characters, as well as the inclusion of Autumn’s pets, I was grinning one minute and gasping the next. The steam level is high, the hero definitely all alpha in his protective, jealous, and possessive tendencies.

I love when one of my favorite authors starts a new series. I am so excited to see Freya Barker bring her special brand of writing into Susan Stoker's Police and Fire/Badge of Honor world. Ms. Barker weaves a fiery story of friendship, intrigue, and passion in Burning for Autumn. To be honest, when I've read about Keith Blackfoot in other books by Ms. Barker I thought he left a lot to be desired as a hero. He seemed cocky and arrogant, almost aloof from those around him. I'm so happy Ms. Barker proved me wrong.
When Keith first meets Autumn by chance, there is an initial spark, but she proves that not only is her hair fiery, so is her temperament. Passionate about her temporary assignment in the new burn unit, Autumn's years in research are now real people who she interacts with daily. Durango is plagued by a serial arsonist, and Keith is saddled being the interim chief of police instead of investigating the crimes as he should be. As Keith and Autumn's romance ignites, danger starts coming closer to home and Keith's fierce protective side comes into play.
Ms. Barker's characters are always a rich mix of family, friends, and colleagues who become like family. Keith turns out to be so much more than I had ever imagined, and Autumn is one very lucky woman on many fronts. Not only is he a fine specimen of a man, he's protective, loyal, caring, and passionate. As the layers of the intrigue unfold, things heat up on all fronts. Cameo appearances by Chief and Sophie, from Ms. Stoker's book and characters from the Durango FBI office made this an even more enjoyable read, with book friends popping up here and there.
This book showcases all of the things that make Ms. Barker one of my favorite authors. Great character development, exciting storylines, a mystery to make a reader think, and realistic adult relationships with real emotions and situations. While we all love to read those sexy scenes, real life dictates that while you may love a man, there are times a can of air freshener is your best friend. I am so looking forward to what Ms. Barker has up her sleeve for this story.

BURNING FOR AUTUMN (On Call #1) by Freya Barker is the first romantic suspense in a new series in Susan Stoker’s Badge of Honor World focused on Police and Firefighters. I LOVE Freya Barker’s writing and was very excited to see her entering one of my favorite romance worlds. This book is smoking hot and does not disappoint!

Autumn McCoy accepted a one year work contract for a special program in a new burn unit in Durango. She is sad to leave her girlfriends behind in San Antonio, but she believes she needs to shake up her staid life. She knows she needs to get out and when she takes up the invite of a new friend to meet at The Irish, a local pub where firefighters and police hangout, she runs into an arrogant, but handsome man. Two strong personalities butt heads, but there are sparks there that Autumn is not sure she wants to explore.

Acting Chief of Police, Keith Blackfoot is sick of the politics and responsibilities of being Chief. He wants to go back to being a detective only. He takes a break for the night and runs into a feisty redhead who sets off an interest that he has never felt before. When that redhead seems to have caught the attention of a serial arsonist, he will do anything to protect her even as she fights his protectiveness at every step of the way.

Autumn and Keith are both strong, independent characters who have to learn to trust that what they have found with each other is special before an arsonist destroys their future in flames.

Once again Ms. Barker’s writing pulls me into a story and makes me believe. She breathes life into her characters and expertly twines suspense throughout the romance. I especially love her characters because they are middle age and have either been burned by love before or are career oriented and never bothered with a long-term relationship. I enjoy reading about characters with worries about folds or wrinkles from age when they enter into a new sexual relationship occasionally instead of 20 somethings with perfect everything. She makes her characters very sexual. They are older and know what they want in bed and out and it is HOT!

I highly recommend this book!

Burning for Autumn is a page turner that kept me up into the wee hours finishing it.  Ms. Barker gives us a protective alpha and a fiercely independent, albeit a little too stubborn at times, heroine who set the pages on fire with their chemistry.

Keith and Autumn are thrown together when a series of fires break out in town, their attraction is undeniable from the start. Keith is concerned that the mysterious fires are somehow connected to Autumn and he steps in to protect her, he quickly realizes how independent she is and tries to turn down his alpha a little, TRIES being the operative word.  The back and forth between Keith and Autumn is great, even though sometimes I wanted to smack her and say "STOP being so snarky!"  There are some great supporting characters in this book, some I feel like may have had books of their own but it didn't impact my ability to keep up with the Keith and Autumn's story.

Burning for Autumn has a great mix of humor, suspense and romance keeping the reader engaged from page one throughout the adorable last few words of the book.

HOLY FREAKEN MOLY!!!! Okay, okay, okay....DEEP BREATH!!!! If you know me, you KNOW I ADORE everything Freya Barker for sooooooo many reasons! From her clean, crisp, wonderfully expressive words to the (seemingly) effortless flow of her MASTER storytelling abilities. From the completely CAPTIVATING, nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat suspense to the unbelievably down-to-earth, REALISTIC characters. This book is no exception and one of my FAVORITE reads from Ms. Barker!

In Burning for Autumn, which is kicking off what I think will be an AWEMAZING series, the Hero Keith Blackfoot (whom we met, but don't really know, in Freya's Rock Point series) is now interim Chief of Police at the Durango PD when he meets his match (and THEN some) in the fiery, feisty, Autumn McCoy who is in Durango on a temporary contract at the new burn centre. As the story unfolds, with MANY surprises and unexpected twists, I fell ABSOLUTELY in love with both of these characters! The suspense and some drama, to say nothing of the intense chemistry between them, that builds to the INSANELY satisfying conclusion and epilogue had me sighing in contentment!

I can't recommend this book AND this author highly or STRONGLY enough and I can't WAIT to see what's coming next!!!

I was gifted an Arc in return for an honest review

I’ve been waiting for Keith Blackfoot’s story for what feels like forever!!
He’s met his match in a little red-headed hurricane.
Autumn has a history, but she is helping burn victims with aftercare.
There’s a rash of fires breaking out all over Durango, and Keith is acting Chief. He’s instantly attracted to Autumn and will not stop until he gets Autumn right where he wants her, Safe and in his arms.

This book was amazing
And I love every single book Freya writes, she never disappoints me

This book was an amazing read for me. I love a good suspense and mystery story. When Autumn McCoy took a temporary job in Durango she thought it would be safe for her but boy oh boy was she wrong. She finds herself the target of a crazy arsonist. Police Chief Keith Blackfoot wants to get back to good old fashion police work. Boy is he in for a surprise when his town becomes a playground for a crazy arsonist. Keith is determined to find out who this arsonist is and why they are burning down buildings.

So Autumn and Kieth come together to find out who this arsonist is and while spending time together they start to like each other and flames spark between them. While things are heating up for them the crazy arsonist is determined to hurt Autumn. How is Kieth going to protect her and his town? Will he be able to find out who the arsonist is? This is a must read action packed romantic suspense mystery that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY can steal my breath with their writing quite the way Freya Barker does. It doesn’t matter what is going on in my life, good or bad, the second I open a book by her I’m taken away to my happy place. Burning for Autumn took me away in a story filled with suspense, mystery, and a whole lot of love! Autumn and Keith are yet another couple in a long list of “BEST COUPLES EVER” by Freya that I can say I’ll happily go back and read over and over.
Autumn is a fiercely independent, extremely smart, sweetheart of a woman with just the right amount of sass to round her out into someone awesome. But even with all that going for her she’s also quite lonely, especially in a new place. Keith is *sigh* everything you swoon over when you think of an alpha male cop. Strong, brave, protective, and like all men packing a lot of testosterone occasionally a bit dense when it comes to dealing with a woman like Autumn.
These two have an immediate pull to each other that starts out with some fantastic back and forth. Autumn certainly knew how to keep him on his toes! That builds up into something both explosive and beautiful as these two grow closer and closer. Along with that though the mystery and suspense that are woven throughout with the fires add another layer that pulls you even deeper into their story and creates a book that you just can’t stop reading!

BURNING FOR AUTUMN is my favourite Freya Barker book to date! Two great protagonists plus a suspenseful plot kept me entertained from start to finish.

Autumn McCoy is a character from Susan Stoker’s Badge of Honor series. I haven’t read any of Stoker’s books so I can’t comment on what Autumn was like in her books but in this one, she is quite the firecracker. I enjoyed her story very much.

I loved Keith. He is confident and comfortable in himself, and once he quickly lay claim to Autumn he had no issues in showing his affection.

Both Autumn and Keith are independent and committed to their careers. They come with some baggage, as all people in their forties do, and even if a relationship is not something either of them were actively looking for, they were open to the opportunity. Autumn and Keith’s bickering about relationship boundaries was amusing. There is a very short scene where they discuss the expectations and pitfalls of sharing space with another person – something neither of them has really done – that had me sniggering and nodding my head in agreement. It’s a small thing but in a few lines of dialogue it shows their level of comfort with each other.

On the suspense front, there’s a serial arsonist at work in Durango and the police have few leads to work with. I found the suspense element well plotted and suitably paced. I was happy to be led by the story and did not try to figure out who the arsonist was ahead of time.

I highly recommend BURNING FOR AUTUMN.

I was first drawn to Keith and Autumn's story when I read Hwy 550, Keith intrigued me and I loved his protective relationship with Luna, so I went straight onto reading Keith's story.

Keith is everything I hoped he would be, absolutely lovable, protective & bossy, but old enough to know when he has crossed a line. I loved how he quickly gained a deep understanding of how he and Autumn worked together, knew what the sticking points were, knew what would fire the other up, even knowing that he still blew it, but was man enough to get on that and fix it.

Autumn is a fiery red head, independent and holds her own when going chest to chest with Keith, I just loved their relationship.

Keith, as an interim Chief of Police in Durango is attracted to Autumn from first sight and their relationship develops quickly. There is a fire bug in town Keith is investigating the case and it becomes evident that Autumn is a target, there are suspects, threats and crimes to solve. This is just a great, entertaining read, really enjoyed it and I loved that we touch base with characters from the Rock Point series.

And ... she does it again! Burning for Autumn is another gem from the mistress of romance and suspense, Freya Barker.

Let start by saying that I REALLY love Keith Blackfoot in this story. He’s one hot, sexy alpha cop who definitely meets his match with Autumn, a snarky, sassy researcher from Mercy Hospital’s burn unit, who happens to be new in town as well.

The attitude and banter that plays between Keith and Autumn is quite amusing. She’s fiercely independent, but Blackfoot isn’t dissuaded by her in the least. Once they find themselves on the same page, the two actually are a great couple. I also really enjoyed all the other characters in this book, whether they’re new or some we recognize from Freya’s other books.

While someone has been sending notes to Autumn, fires have been deliberately set around town and it has everything to do with her. As Keith tries to keep her safe, he and other law enforcement pull together to try and figure out who the arsonist could be. There’s sure plenty of twists and turns, and I was left on the edge of my seat wondering who was guilty.

As with all of Freya Barker’s stories, her attention to detail and description makes it so easy to lose yourself in the world she creates. Her mature characters are real people with flaws and all, which makes any one of them completely relatable. This is definitely a great start to a new series, and I love how it intertwines with Susan Stoker’s Badge of Honor series. I say the same thing about every one of Freya’s books, but she is the BEST STORYTELLER of our time! I highly recommend this one and can’t wait for more. Five stars for me!

This was an amazing beginning to what I am sure is going to be an a amazing new series!!!
I love this authors writing style and the fact that most of her characters are already sorta settled into their lives. They aren't in their 20's and i love that! And there is always some sort of excitement with danger in her books! I don't read much suspense but i don't pass up the offer to read Ms. Barker's writing.
I loved Autumn and Keith so much!!! When i "met" Keith in the Rock Point series I thought good grief this guy is a D*ck!!!! I am so glad that Ms. Barker wrote this book because it totally changed my opinion of him!

Burning For Autumn is the first book in the new series, On Call, but also features characters from other series and even another author (Susan Stoker). I just love when an author interconnects series with others but is a standalone still.

Keith Blackfoot has been a bit of an enigma for me when he has appeared in previous books so it was great to dig deep and see what this alpha police guy has been hiding.

Autumn is in a new town on a short term contract at the burns unit. She has not made many, if any, new friends since she has been in town so takes a punt on the local bar to rectify that. Unfortunately the person she sits at the side of in the bar happens to be Keith and they get off on the wrong foot. Hence the storyline unravels with these fiercely independent twosome fighting off the inevitable of taking a chance on love.

The sub story of the suspense element was cleverly executed and kept me guessing as to who the perpetrator was right until it was revealed. Usually I can spot them a mile away but this time it got me good. Brilliant!

I loved the connection and passion between Keith and his Red (Autumn) and the banter between them was something else. The chemistry and sexy times was off the charts steamy which I loved to see develop into so much more. I think these two are my most favourite of all Ms Barker’s characters and I could click with them both from the offset.

This series has got off to a stellar start and I can’t wait to read the next books. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend you grab it to devour like I did. A massive five stars from me.

What a thrilling and passionate story. I love my romantic suspense and Freya Barker is a queen of balancing romance with knuckle biting mystery and action. Autumn is truly a fitting name for our feisty heroine. Red-head, head strong and independent. She's got layers and only the added strength of Keith can get under. He's strong you yet loyal and protective. This community Freya built up seemed homey and inviting. I loved all the secondary characters and really can't wait for more. This couple showed how sometimes strength is better when you're a team as it solidifies and increases the foundation your building. Great epilogue.

Another great book by Freya Barker! To be honest, I don't know the books that she was inspired by for this series, but they sound amazing! I have to start off by saying it took me a bit longer for this story to suck me in than previous books written by this author, but once I was in, there was no going back!

Autumn is starting a new career/job and finding her way around this new town. Keith is an officer and chief (even though he doesn't want to be). They run into each other because of a series of fires that have been torturing this town.

I loved Autumn. She is not the most social person (it's clear that things have happened to her) and her best friends don't live close anymore. I loved that she had cats (all 5 of them). I am definitely a cat lady, so this was a nice touch to this story! Autumn changed a lot in this story and finally starts letting her walls down.
Keith is a strong person who wants criminals behind bars. He's not happy being chief at the moment and doing anything possible to change that. All the fires are doubling his workload and he is determined to find the arsonist. Keith is very protective and will do anything to keep the ones he loves safe, even if he may seem a bit demanding at times.

Burning for Autumn isn't just a romance though. I loved the suspense element in this story. We never knew when the next fire would strike or who would be involved (especially after it hit close to home). While reading I loved trying to figure out who was behind all the fires. I didn't expect how it turned out.
The romance was a great element as well and I was happy to see it was a bit of a slowburn in the beginning. Autumn was careful, but Keith was determined to follow his feelings. They're so sweet together and I would love to read more about them!

On top of al of this, Burning for Autumn has a great crew of characters. I loved the cameos from a few characters we know and love from a different series. Autumn's best friend and husband are so fun and I would love more of them! Luna is a tough cookie and also deserves her own happily ever after! I'm glad to see she will be getting her own story!

All in all, I really enjoyed this story. Only as a cat lover this story was a bit hard at times. I understand why it went the way it did though. Something like that could happen in real life with a disturbed person like this book has. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

When I am in the mood for a really great romantic suspense book I know where to go. This is the first book in the On Call Series and it's a winner. As our tale begins we meet Autumn who is working in the burn unit at Mercy Hospital in Durango, Colorado where our story takes place. Ms. Barker's heroes and heroines are always a bit older and it is one of my favorite aspects of her books.
"I'm only forty-two and not quite done kicking a few cans myself", Autumn points out. Keith is the acting Chief of Police. Alpha to the core but not overbearing. Of course he screws up a time or two! But he is pretty quick to realize it and address it with Autumn. A serial arsonist is at the heart of our story. An arsonist who is in some way connected to Autumn . Keith is simultaneously trying to protect Autumn and find the culprit. Without giving anything away I will tell you that the villain wasn't who I thought it was, and it wasn't the second person I thought it could be! I found out at the same time as the characters did which both surprised and delighted me. The story kept me turning the pages and the love story was heart-warming and realistically paced. I will certainly be on the lookout for the next one in this series.

I didn't realize that this one was connected to Susan Stoker's Badge of Honor series, specificly Shelter for Sophie, but as I love Stoker's books I was happy to learn this. This book pretty much followed that formula, not a lot of drama between the couple, more outside drama that they are drawn into.

Autumn seemed a bit lost at the start of the book, loving her job, but she was in a new place with no one she knew, so no friends or social life. She took a chance to go to bar where first responders hang out after a fireman that she saw at the hospital told her of the place. From there things seemed to take a turn for the better for her. She runs into Keith, has a bit of an odd interaction, but runs into him again, the same thing happens, but you can tell both of them are intrigued. Then Sophie and Roman come to visit her and lo and behold Roman knows Keith and the 4 of them are out having fun. Autumn and Keith start seeing each other, in the mean time fires start breaking out around town and the fire bug leaves notes for Autumn, which makes Keith's head start to explode. Keith investigates, but nothing is found, things start to escalte more and Autumn takes some hard hits along the way as she becomes targeted.

As Keith investigates they become closer, with a couple of tiffs along the way. By the end of the book things are smoothed out, Autumn is happy where she is, finally building a new life with lots of friends and Keith.

Another fabulous book by Freya Barker! Seriously I’m a broken record, small town setting with hot law enforcement officer and feisty heroine is one my favorite or my actual favorite type of read. I absolutely loved this story about Autumn and Keith. What I really appreciated about them was that they were in their 40s, there really are not a lot of books featuring older characters (that is one of the things I love about Kristen Ashley too!!) so that was a bonus for me.

Autumn is in Durango on a temporary basis, she is assisting on setting up a brand new burn center at Mercy Hospital. This opportunity may have come at just the right time for her, she misses her friends in San Antonio, but she was feeling stagnant in her life there. So to make sure to get out there and not become a cliched spinster cat lady, she decides to check out the local pub. She even strikes up a conversation with man she had been eyeing. I actually loved this first meet. I won’t say too much about it, you all have to read it, but it was really cute.

Their paths cross again but under very different circumstances. There is a serial arsonist in town and for some reason Autumn may be right in the middle of it all. When her life is put in danger, Keith’s protective instinct kicks in. This protector side of Keith definitely amps up the chemistry between the two, and their chemistry is hot! The suspense portion of their story was interesting and kept me on my toes.

I really did love this book and highly recommend it. Loved the epilogue, but I wanted more!! I am definitely looking forward to her future books in this series and may even look into branching out to the other books in this Fan-Fiction world!

I enjoyed reading a new series that included characters from a previous series. Autumn is 42, and Keith is 44. She is on a temporary contract from another state and starts to get cryptic, handwritten notes. At first, they seemed harmless, but as fires are being started frequently since she arrived in town, they start to feel ominous.

I liked Autumn or Red as Keith calls her. She is independent and a cat lady. I wish there was more revealed about her own incident, which was mentioned but not elaborated on. Keith was such an alpha male, but not in a totally obnoxious way. This is more of a suspense story with a romance than vice versa. Figuring out who is the arsonist and where they would strike next kept me invested in the story.

Keith's reactions to other men in her life could be a bit over-the-top, but ultimately he is a good man. There are some very sexy, erotic scenes that are also romantic. A couple of scenes were similar to other stories in the series, but there were a couple of unexpected twists that kept this feeling fresh.

I liked the side characters who were their friends or who just helped out. I am also even more excited by the excerpt for Hwy 550 because I really like Luna and have been waiting for her story. And that teaser really whet my appetite!

Burning for Autumn by Freya Barker
On Call #1

Autumn McCoy has been given the opportunity to set up a burn unit program in Durango and is busy doing what she loves when she meets Keith Blackfoot at a bar recommended to her by a fireman she met at work. They have an interesting interaction and that is pretty much that until they meet again. There is a serial arsonist on the loose in town and Keith is sometimes frustrated that he has to spend so much time with the paperwork of the temporary job he holds – he would much rather be detecting. As Autumn and Keith get closer...so does the arsonist. With more fires, injuries and a clue that Autumn is at risk Keith steps up to keep her safe...or at least tries to. There is an eventual HEA for the couple but they do have to work through a few things first.

This book is a spin-off of a “world” created by the author Susan Stoker. I have not read any of the books in that series but did not need to to thoroughly enjoy this book. That said...I am eager to read what comes next in the On Call series :)

Thank you to NetGalley and … for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Freya Barker is one of my favorite authors, and never disappoints. Her characters are easy to relate to and represent real life to me.
"Burning for Autumn" is full of suspense, passion, and angst, with endearing and memorable characters. I have not read Susan Stoker's series, but I thoroughly enjoyed Autumn, and was thrilled to see Keith Blackfoot star in this book. Joe Benedetti was a nice surprise - hoping to see him again in this series.
This is a great start to what promises to be another winning series by Freya Barker. Highly recommend!

Love the start of this new series. Think this may be 4 1/2 star. Really appreciate some of the understated however very good discriptions with minimal words. An example that is not a spoiler but made me snort with laughter and was most fitting to the scene “unhampered by any expertise on the subject.”. Yep said it all. Yes I have pre purchased my own copy. Very happy to get an early peak. Very enjoyable

Autumn took a temporary position in Durango at a newly opened burn unit. A few months after her move she meets interim Police Chief Keith Blackfoot. Sparks fly as the 2 banter at a local bar. Unfortunately real sparks fly when a firebug starts burning homes and buildings in Durango. Keith suspects a connection to Autumn but can he find the link before she is hurt?

This was my first Freya Barker book and what a great introduction. I love a good romantic suspense. The author did a great job of balancing the story so that fans of either genre will enjoy. Great characters that I could quickly fall in love with and want them to have a happily ever after. I am looking forward to reading some additional books by this author.

Billed as Romantic Suspense, Burning for Autumn delivers both and a first-rate whodunit!

A serial arsonist has the town of Durango, Colorado on edge. No one knows when or where he’ll strike next.

Amidst the chaos, clinical researcher Autumn McCoy and Chief of Police Keith Blackfoot have a budding relationship that gets off to a less than stellar beginning.

Thrown together again by mutual friends, they realize they like each other. But their time together always ends with another fire… and the fire hits too close to home.

After Autumn suffers a devastating loss and blow to her psyche, it becomes clear the fires are connected to her. But who? Why?

The deeper the story goes, the more of a page-turner it becomes. Someone is watching Autumn, which she should have realized early in the story because… the anonymous notes. DUH!

Keith and the small Durango Police Department reach out to the FBI for assistance before the next loss is Autumn.

As suspects are vetted, tensions—and emotions—run high.

The author does a great job of distraction and planting the seeds of doubt. By the time I was nearing the 80% mark, I was ready to arrest Jack, the tabby!

Excellent character development! I felt as though I knew these characters and where their heads… and hearts were.

While Autumn’s temporary assignment in Durango has caused her to leave what little life she had behind in San Antonio, she is making friends… slowly.

A bad childhood and a bad marriage keep her bottled up and closed off until she meets Keith.

I loved Keith. Actually, I loved all the men in this read because they’re just regular guys. Except for Stan (the mayor)—he’s an ass. And the arsonist—he’s a whack job.

The supporting female characters are spot on too. There is genuine affection and respect, but no one is afraid to call anyone else out on their crap. Very refreshing!

My only obstacle is Autumn. I struggled to like her.

With a nod to the aforementioned craptastic childhood and marriage, she was too caustic for me. Even worse, it felt forced.

Defense mechanism? I’m sure.

But Keith isn’t some chest-pounding Neanderthal strutting around grunting, “I’m man, you woman,” he’s a cop who’s also falling for the woman targeted by a madman.

Off the cuff, she was confrontational and annoying. Her determination to not be controlled, managed, or handled got old pretty quick for me because Keith wasn’t that guy. (When he laid his heart bare, I couldn’t breathe! What happened to the air?)

But when Autumn gave it thought before opening her mouth, she was human and genuine… and gracious. And those gracious moments were perfect and great romance!

As the dragnet closes in on the arsonist, Autumn goes back to the TSTL-mindset (but it isn’t permanent) which could lead her to lose Keith and her life.

But Keith is determined not to let that happen on his watch. Along with two great backups, he sets out to beat the serial arsonist and murderer at his own game.

The meaning of the title of the book falls from the lips of the whack job and it’s a gut punch because… Mr. Bartik.

Good stuff!

This is book 1 in the On Call series and I’m ready for book 2… which drops next month. Grab this one today so you’ll be ready too.

Enjoy!
