I don't normally like 1st person narration but Cornwell,s writing carries you along. This book reopened my interest in Anglo Saxon history especially Aethelflead who I first came across many years ago through a project at work. The description of the chaos caused by the Viking invasions is wonderfully described and the plot leaves you wanting more.

Eagerly awaiting the next one in the series. Love the nonle & genuine character Utred of Bebbanberg. Q captivatinh serious where history & fiction lovingly entwine with plenty of romance, betrayal, treachery, blood, gore & injustice. But everyone knows that in the end of a good page turner, the good guy always wins!

Not a single sentence is superflous. Educates you about the period throughout. Meticulous theoretical craftmanship glazed with all the shiny bits that are required for a sensational page turner; yet never overly exploitative of the vulgar and base.
